Thermoplastic blow molding of metalic glass (BMG”s)

Scientists at Yale university have created a material that has the flexibility of manufacturing of thermoplastics and the strength and durability of metals. The material being referred to as Metalic glass (BMG’s) can be formed using thermoplastic blow molding technique’s at the same economical manufacturing rate of plastics. This process will lend itself to the production of new product lines that were previously not possible. This has been possible due to the materials random arranged atoms and low critical cooling rate.

The Pavegen floor tiles are a new system of kinetic generated energy that is produced by merely been walked upon. Placed in high traffic area’s as in the Westfield Stratford shopping complex in London , energy is store (2.1 watt-hours of electricity or stored in lithium batteries beneath the surface) and used to generate lighting within the shopping complex.They are eco friendly consisting of marine grade stainless with recycled polymers and low carbon concrete. Each tile illuminates once it has been walked upon as a means to let the user aware of their contribution if not to entice users to target them as often as possible while shopping.

These sound absorbing curtains were designed to fill the void between applying opaque material for sound absorption to translucent materials for visibility. This material fills this void by allowing visibility while absorbing up to 5 times more noise than traditional curtains.The process involved a collaboration between acoustical engineers, textile experts and computer modellers to remodel the molecular make up of the pattern material. Not an easy task to accomplish with a low density material to work with.

Although the material has been around for over a century , its uses are now only becoming apparent in relation to application in reference to existing materials such as glass. Even though it has a low density (in some cases lighter than air ) , it’s acoustic , thermal and electrical properties make it a preferable option to glass. Its only downside at present being its cost factor in reguards to glass , but will be only a matter of time before it will become a more viabile option within general use.

By far one of my favorite products that i have come across. The QuaDror system is a interlocking structual joint that has been developed into many applications. As a concrete joint its uses range from construction of temporary emergency shelters to a base structure for a bridge.This system has also expanded through other material applications in different sizes . The trestle base used for an initial  table design is the basis for his shelter architectural series , ranging from architectural stand alone designs to shelter relief in disadvantaged area’s. The university of Sydney have unveiled a new type of Graphene paper that is composed of processed and compacted graphite to which it is milled and purified to form its new thin structure. It is 10x the strength of steel while having good electrical, thermal and mechanical properties. This being so it’s potential as a material within product development will make substantial inroads on product design due to it being considerablely lighter and stronger than steel.

Design studio Aqua Creations in collaboration with origami artist Ilan Garibi have created a series of diffused lamps. Each design is a combination of geometrical origami shapes to which create a textured illusion when light is emitted.The texturised effect allows for the shades to emit varying tones of  light as to highlight its deconstructive form.
